Long Time Gone Update

I did make some progress in the sewing room this last weekend, although not as much as I was hoping for.  Isn’t that always the case?

The binding and the sleeve on the Stair Steps baby quilt (29 1/2″ x 37 1/2″) was finished Friday evening.  This is my 12th finished quilt for the year – only 13 more to make my 2017 goal.

The remaining checkerboard blocks for Long Time Gone and the Rainbow Braids were Saturday’s projects.

I decided to put a solid black sashing strip between the braids and found some fabric from my stash for the border.

Sunday & Monday was spent working on four Pineapple blocks for the Long Time Gone quilt.  I am using Marti Michell’s temples for the Pineapple blocks, but I was totally unprepared for how long it would take to piece these four blocks.  There are more Pineapple blocks to make, but that will be a project for another day.

My goal this week is to finish the Rainbow Braid quilt and then back to Long Time Gone blocks – I would really like to get another section completed over the Memorial Day weekend.

Long Time Gone Week 9

I can’t believe how many days I obsessed about the color placement in the Log Cabin blocks.  Finally I just went for it and started cutting out the strips needed.

After all that drama and stress I am very pleased with end results.  My best decision was to add some rows using the background fabric – I didn’t want these blocks to be dark & overpowering and the background lightens things up wonderfully.

There was also enough time on Sunday to sew all the Stair Step blocks together, add the borders and have a completed quilt top.

The white inner border and the medium blue outer border help lighten this quilt top (do you see a theme here?).  The top measures 30 1/2″ x 38 1/2″ which will make a nice baby boy quilt for draping over a stroller or a baby carrier.

This week I will be busy sewing HST for the next three Long Time Gone blocks.  It will also be time to move it to a larger design wall.  I am ready to see all the parts come together in a completed quilt top.

Design Wall Monday 05-08-17

The Long Time Gone sew-along is consuming most of my sewing time, but I did make some progress on Rainbow Braids and Stair Steps.

Stair Steps was designed by Jo Kramer and published in the American Patchwork & Quilting August 2016 magazine.  All the HST are leftovers from the half Snowball blocks in Buried Treasures.  I don’t usually keep the cut off triangles from 2 1/2″ strips, but since there were 144 of these I did.  My plan is to only use these triangles and not make any more, so I will have 36 blocks.  Right now I am considering a 5 x 7 block layout with a finished size of 20″ x 24″ before borders – a nice size for a small hanging or doll quilt.

The purple/blue braid is finished for the Rainbow Braid.

All the parts for the remaining braids have been cut out, so they should come together fairly quickly.  Originally I was only going to have 4 braids, but after seeing them on the design wall I decided to have 7 total braids.  There will be sashing between the braids, but I won’t know what color to use until all the braids are completed.
