Buried Treasure

Buried Treasure is now a completed quilt.  Yeah – number 11 for the year.  Because of the high contrast in this quilt, I used monofilament thread to machine quilt a meander motif.  This project turned out even better than the idea in my head which is always a wonderful thing.   I plan on keeping this one at my house for now.

Design Wall Monday 04-24-17

The last three days have been very productive in the sewing department.  On Friday I pieced sashing on the Lincoln quilt and finished the bottom right corner.

What a difference it makes having three corners finished!  The dark green Lincoln block will be the next piece of this puzzle.  I plan to start on it as soon as I finish the next Long Time Gone block.

Long Time Gone and the Lincoln quilt require so many decisions and so much focus that I wanted to just sit and sew without a lot of thought.  That project was Buried Treasures and it was so relaxing to work on this weekend.  All the decisions had already been made for this quilt except for the layout, so all I had to do was enjoy the feel of the fabric going through the machine.  In fact it was so relaxing that I finished the top yesterday afternoon.

The biggest hassle with Buried Treasures was that the jelly roll strips had the pinking sheers cut – which I don’t like at all – but I am very pleased with the end results.

I like the bright dynamic feel of this quilt and didn’t want to cage it in with a border.  The top is 48″ square and will make a great baby quilt.

Today I need to organize my sewing space so that I am all ready for all the Churn Dashes (21) I will need to make for the Long Time Gone sew-along.

Design Wall Monday 04-17-17

I am current on the Long Time Gone blocks and just finished a setting triangle for the Lincoln quilt, so I decided I needed an easy piecing project. Buried Treasure was the winner.  Last November I pulled out some leftover jelly roll strips in red/purple and black/gray/brown to cut into squares for this project.  There was something very soothing in feeding fabric through the machine without having to make any decisions.

There are two units in each block – a Four-Patch and a Floating Star – and as you can see all the four-patches are completed.

This is what the finished block will look like.  I am going to have fun trying out different layouts on the design wall once all the blocks are completed.

The Buried Treasure pattern is in the April 2015 American Patchwork & Quilting magazine.  Since I was limited by the fabric on hand, my version of Buried Treasure will be smaller than the one in the magazine.

Tomorrow the next block for the Long Time Gone sew-along will be posted, so tonight I will need to set this aside until the end of the week.
