It has been rainy and dreary here for the last two days which makes it difficult to take good pictures. So I decided that I would show you the Alphabet quilt in its new home.
All along I intended for this quilt to be a birthday present for JP on his 4th birthday. I couldn’t say anything about that on this blog because I wanted it to be a surprise for him and his mother.
Here is JP and his younger sister Emerson doing a close inspection of the quilt.
I promised Emerson that she would get her own quilt when she moves into a big girl bed.
The quilt looks like it will be well loved. If you would like to check out the further adventures of these two cuties, go here.
The Alphabet Quilt was a challenge. At 60″ x 70″ it is the largest quilt top that I have quilted.
One of my favorite things about this quilt is the surprise of the flannel in the middle of the block.
Every time I sit down at my Handi-Quilter, I am glad that I made the plunge and bought it. It has really increased my machine quilting skills and the number of quilts that I finish myself.
This week also held a surprise – I sold my first quilt through my Etsy store. This year has expanded my quilting in quite a few different areas and it has been fun!
With the leftovers from the alphabet quilt blocks, I made nine patches leader and ender style.
I have enough 2 1/2″ squares cut to make five more blocks. My first thought was that some Dr Seuss fabric would be great as the alternate square –
but as soon as I placed a nine patch on the fabric, I knew that it wouldn’t work – too much white. The picture really shows how the black fabric makes the colors pop. There isn’t enough of this black fabric to use in the quilt, so I found a black with white musical notes and colored instruments in my stash.
I really enjoy making a second quilt with the leftover fabric from the first one. It makes me feel like I am getting a second quilt for free. If you enjoy working with the colors the first time around, why not repeat the fun?
Oh my goodness – where did the last week go?
I got the alphabet quilt top finished. I don’t have a picture of the completed top, but here is a picture just before the rows were sewn together. There are six rows – the last one was camera shy.
This is my favorite block – what a cute bunny. You really can’t tell from the picture, but the center part of the block is actually flannel. The black sashing is quilting cotton and the outer block border is batik. I have no problem mix and matching to get the effect that I want.
The quilt is 59 1/2″ x 70 1/2′ – a nice lap size quilt. I am planning on quilting a meander with rainbow variegated thread.
