Design Wall Monday 08.13.18

Last Saturday and Sunday was the first free weekend after five weeks filled with crazy wonderful good times with family & friends, so I declared it a “stay at home sewing retreat”.  The first goal was the completion of the Diamond Tiles quilt top.

The recap – all the blocks were completed and the black sashing was determined to be a poor choice- dull, dreary and uninspired.

Maybe a black & white stripe would be a good choice – definitely NOT!

After a raid on the fabric stash a third contender appeared.  Hey, look at this – A Winner!

The dot fabric was approx 22″ x 61″ and there were only a few scraps left once all the sashing was cut & pieced.

Now the borders – The black & white strip really wanted to play in this quilt, so it became the inner border.  The inner border was cut 2″ to make it a bit wider than the sashing although I wasn’t sure if I liked it until the quilt top was finished.  There was 1 yard of the black & white fabric which was just enough for the inner border and binding.  Another piece of fabric bites the dust.

The outer border has a black background and rainbow colored butterflies.  Since the fabric measured 17″ x 75″, it made the width of the outer border an easy decision – cut 4″ wide.  Now there are only a couple of small scraps of this fabric left – what a wonderful fabric buster Diamond Tiles turned out to be.

In my opinion the slightly wider inner border and the slightly narrower outer border keep the quilt top from looking too dark – I like it.  The final size of the top is 59 1/2″ x 67 1/2″.

The next project will be the machine quilting of the Dancing Tree wallhanging.

Great choice for the sashing and the stripe inner border really sets everything off.
