Baby Hot Flashes Finished

071413 (860x1024) I remembered reading this post on Bonnie Hunter’s blog about quilting baptist fans. Basically what she does is hand quilt the fans around the outside first and then spiral in towards the center.  Since my HQ is a sit down model, I wondered if I could machine quilt the fans in the same way – and the answer is yes.  Thank you Bonnie!

The last time I quilted fans they were in rows across the top from bottom to top which reminds me more of a clam shell motif.  The inward spiral of fans moves the eye to the center of the quilt.

Memorial Day Finishes

Over the Memorial Day weekend I finished two quilts – Scrappy Trip Around the World and Rainbow Stars.

The Scrappy Trip was quilted with vertical and horizontal grid lines.  It is different than my usual diagonal cross hatch, but I like it.  The quilt measures 63.5” x 76”.

The Rainbow Stars was meander quilted with the thread color matching the block.  This wall hanging is 36.5” x 45.5”.

Next project  is some more blocks for Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler.  What project are you working on?

A Mother’s Day Finish

I was so happy to get the binding finished on this quilt.  The top was finished 8 or 9 years ago, the machine quilting was done earlier this year, and now it is completed – yeah!

051213 (846x1024)The quilt measures 43″ x 52.5″ and the pattern is Follow the Leader from the Quilts from The Quiltmaker’s Gift book.

Looking at the picture, I start wondering if I should have used a yellow binding  instead of the black.  Of course, if I had used yellow I would probably be sitting here thinking that black binding would have looked better.

Happy Mother’s Day

Baby Quilt Finished

I did it!  All three of my quilting goals for April have been completed.  Here is the finished baby quilt.

042913 (967x1024)I quilted 1/4″ inside all of the blocks and did a square loop design in the white & border.042913A (1024x768)I found 1/4 yard of this fabric for the sleeve.  Isn’t it perfect?

042913B (1024x768)This quilt was so much fun to make.  I may need to make another one.

Hot Flashes Completed

041313A (1024x768)

It has been a busy week quilting and binding this top, but it is finished!  I don’t have a place in my house to take a picture of twin-sized or larger quilts, so here it is on my bed.  Doesn’t it look great?  Since this one is a present, I am planning on making a second Hot Flashes just for me.

A close up of the quilting –

I learned two lessons while I was quilting this top.  If the machine is skipping stitches, check to see if the needle is in backwards and I really need to practice echo quilting.

The first project on my list for April is now finished.  Next up is another fleece/flannel blanket.  What is on your quilting list?

Binding Finished on Number 3

Three down – two to go.

031613 (805x1024)This project was started 5 or 6 years ago.  There was a three part quilt sampler in a magazine that I decided to make.  I pulled out purple, orange and green fat quarters from a Jinny Beyer collection and started making blocks.  All the blocks from part one were completed, but then the project stalled.  After four years as a UFO, I pulled it out in 2011, decided that the original quilt was no longer interesting or my style, and put the finished blocks in this setting.  Actually I had enough finished blocks to make two quilt tops, but this is the one that was finished.

I started out with gray thread and an allover quilting design, but ended up with invisible thread and a 2″ cross hatch.  When something doesn’t work, try something different.

This quilt is a donation quilt, so even though it isn’t my favorite I know that someone out there will be happy to give it a home.

Lazy Eyes Bound

The second quilt is finished!

030213 (1024x1012)The quilt measures 59″ square.  I like how the little squares dance around in a circle within each block.

This is one of my fastest finishes.  The top, quilting and binding was all completed in February.

I am getting ready to start the binding on the next top.  What are you working on?

Finish – Shadow Shoo-Fly

The binding is on the Shadow Shoo-Fly quilt.  This pattern is from the book “Shadow Quilts” by Patricia Magaret and Donna Slusser.  It finished at 39 1/2″ square.

022713 (1024x1024) I think this top was made in 2007 and I remember having problems getting the triangle border to fit properly.  During the winter of 2007, I was looking through my sewing room for a quilt top but not finding it.  Finally one weekend, I corralled all the quilt tops and made an Excel spreadsheet listing each one.  The spreadsheet shows the finish date of the quilt top, the size, if binding had been cut and which container it is in.  This quilt top was made before I started recording all this information.  By the way, I did find the quilt top that started all this.

This wall hanging was machine quilted using a stencil and stencil spray.  The stencil spray was an accidental purchase, so I decided that it was time to try it.  I discovered that I like other methods of marking a quilt better.  The spray was  messy and took some work to remove the markings from the finished quilt.

However, I did a free hand quilting design in the triangle border which I was very pleased with.

022713A (1024x768)The next binding project is the scrappy Lazy Eyes quilt.  Isn’t it such satisfaction to finally completed  a project – even if it takes 6 years?
